The Daily Nation yesterday did a rather disturbing feature on one Johanna Kiplagat Matwek. For those who did not get it the first time, this is the fellow who killed his two girls, Miriam Chebet and Pilato Kibet then aged 9 and 3 respectively, and ate their brains. Yeah, a-t-e. Actually cooked and ate their brains. And for good measure, he critically injured his father who seemed to have tried to convince him otherwise.
Now this dude was convicted and sentenced to hang and is now appealing against that conviction claiming, inter alia that he was too intoxicated.
That he drank too much and the alcohol somehow put him in a state where he figured it was open season on killing his daughters and eating their brains. This one goes to war with that famous line of ‘it is the devil who made me done it’ and wins hands down all the time. As his grounds for appeal, he also somehow mentions that the fact that a medical report on his psychological state was not provided and taken into account before the judgement on his case was delivered should be a reason to see him walk.
For those who may remember, this is the second Narok guy that the legal process has somehow brought to Nairobi (he was, before his trial, a guest of the infamous Mathare Mental Hospital).
And he now wants to be set free and live a normal life! After all that for one to envisage ever living with oneself, forget about a normal life, there surely has to be something wrong with them to end with.
It is however his closing remarks that give one an idea of the slice of universe this dude inhabits; he is quoted as saying:
“I heard that my wife went back to her parents’ home. But I will go and look for her and persuade her to come back home as I have quit drinking.”
