Imagine that you were to invest your hard earned money into building a block of flats, say somewhere close to Nairobi CBD. Now imagine that you were told that the property you intend to erect your good structures happen to be on a public road or has been earmarked for future extension of a road.
Now imagine that you actually had to make a choice on whether to proceed with your investment and lose Kshs. 16 million of your money or look elsewhere for an alternative property. A no brainer that. Now imagine that the money at risk was not yours but the tax payers and that you were somehow a police officer!
No brainer too to the guy in charge of the construction of the flats meant for the officers’ housing at Central Police Station which were completed last year at a guestimated cost of Kshs. 16 million. The Nairobian understands that two blocks of flats at the Central Police Station have been marked for demolition by the Ministry of Roads to pave way for the expansion of the University Way.
Section of the Kenyan media report that a source at the Kenya Urban Roads Authority confirmed that the Ministry of Internal Security had been warned of the impeding road expansion even as the flats were being put up. A warning which seemingly was ignored to the detriment of the tax payers. More police lines at Kasarani Police Station are also marked to be demolished. The latter however were constructed long before the expansion was envisaged – so we hope.
