Kenya Railways to Reclaim Rails Reserves

Was scanning one of the dailies when I read that Kenya Railways, this 21st of March, published a Notice requiring all those living or in any way occupying or using the railways reserve land to vacate together with all their structures, if any. The rail reserve land, loosely defined is that area 100 feet on either side of the track.

According to Kenya Railways managing director, one Nduva Muli, the said evictions are meant to make way for new projects envisioned for the railway line. Yeah, that. It has absolutely nothing to do with matters of safety. Nothing to do with the need to avoid a train crashing into houses, or ‘residences’ like has happened in the past in Kibera.

Which goes a long way into explaining why despite priors, no serious action has been taken to clear rail reserves before. At least to me, that is.
